Japanese bakeries have a remarkable variety of savoury and sweet breads and pastries… Many of them have either potato or bacon in them, and cheese is everywhere. However, mayonnaise is often used in excess. While I like Japanese mayonnaise, I’m starting to work to avoid it since it’s everywhere. Another popular item at the bakeries is “Curry bread” – more or less a deep fried bun filled with a beef or chicken curry; very rich, very tasty!
They’re cheap too, at least depending on the bakery. Today my lunch of 4 items was only about $5!

On another note, a Japanese teacher at my school today happened to have been to the only place in the world other than the Arctic that has Ptarmigans (basically Arctic chickens for those I haven’t told) – a moutain range in central Japan with an endemic population of Rock Ptarmigans. It was a fun surprise, and I got to try a local treat emblazoned with a ptarmigan too… I almost wish I hadn’t eaten it now!
